Jacob’s Ladder Quilt Block

This quilt block takes its name from the Bible story found in Genesis 28, where Jacob dreams of a ladder that extends to Heaven, with angels going to and from upon it. This is a traditional pattern and when done in just a pattern color plus a back ground color with no in between sashing it has a very nostalgic appearance.

Contemporary quilters will use three and four fabrics to assemble their Jacob’s Ladder quilt blocks or will finish each block with a different pattern color then assemble it in coordinating sequence. The squares can also be separated by strips or sashing for another more modern appearance. This quilt can be made with the rotary method of cutting if you so choose.

When examined carefully you can see that the Jacob’s Ladder quilt block is a nine patch quilt. The two different types of squares are made of either two triangles or four small squares sewn together.

Seldom do you find a quilt block that has only one name. This quilt block has also been called the Underground Railroad block, although there is no historical evidence for it being made prior to the Civil War. It has also been called Stepping Stones, especially when done in four colors and other names refer to it as Rocky Road (to California, to Oklahoma, etc.)and finally, when assembled in red, white and blue, it has been called Road to the White House. Whatever name you give this quilt block, it is a pleasure to have and display in your home.
