Tumbling Quilt Blocks
Tumbling Blocks is a favorite antique quilt design. It consists of three colors of fabrics. All the pieces for this quilt block are cut identically. The blocks are cut into sixty degree diamonds and when three are joined they form a hexagon. That is one block or unit for your quilt. The number of blocks needed varies based on the size of the individual diamonds. The finished unit on a Tumbling Blocks quilt looks like a three dimensional toy block. The entire quilt can be done with just three colors. Another alternative is to stack pyramids of nine block quilts and fill in around them with a solid block equal to three blocks stacked.

It is possible to do the tumbling block quilt with rotary cutter cuts and strip piecing. These two factors make the work go faster. This quilt design can be pieced in several ways. This makes a nice hand pieced quilt, but is also easy to do on the sewing machine. People who like to carry piecing projects also find this tumbling block quilt to be a good one for paper piecing.
Fabric choices make all the difference in a quilt. If the quilter selects three fabrics with diminutive prints done in pastels, it is easily a baby quilt. Other great combinations are patriotic fabrics done in shades of red, white and blue. This quilt block is an optical illusion that will have you seeing stacked blocks as you look at the quilt top and admire the simple graphic lines.
